The Department of Supportive Education offers a multifaceted comprehensive programme for children with special needs from 3 to 18 years of age. It provides an educational context in which pupils of all abilities are able to flourish in various ways and to a degree that might otherwise not be possible.
The Classes of 6 – 8 students are self-contained in modern well equipped rooms within the infrastructure of Dover Court.
Each Individual Needs Class from the Centre is twinned with a Mainstream class for a multiplicity of events including assemblies, field trips, sports days, concerts, and various social activities. Additionally, where appropriate and of mutual benefit, Individual Needs children are integrated for academic subjects. Given this inclusive approach, all children derive benefit from the strengths of a team of highly professional Mainstream, ESL (English as a Second Language) and Exceptional Needs educators. Curricular areas are both integrated and separate. Outcome, rather than mere coverage is the primary focus. Opportunities are provided for each child to interact with children and adults of varying personalities, backgrounds, abilities, interests and ages.
The Department of Supportive Education supports an effective inclusive education for it is a means of achieving the best education for the majority of children, as it makes suitable provision for individual needs without emphasising differences. It upholds the fundamental rights of all children to be valued as individuals, to be treated with dignity and respect and to be loved and cared for in a safe environment. It is a key that opens the door to all future possibilities. Pupils are viewed holistically, attention being paid to cognitive, physical, aesthetic, social and emotional development. Learning is depicted as not only challenging but also pleasurable and rewarding. A Life Skills programme is incorporated into the Special Needs curriculum at stage appropriate levels.
